Modern Structure

Acknowledgements and Final Postings

A final reflection on the research process, presentation of final work, and a discussion of how to continue my growth moving forward.

Final Reflection

Content:

Before starting this project, I had very little knowledge of Dissociative Identity Disorder, in fact, I thought it was still referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder. After completing extensive research, I have now learned about the reality of DID, the associated symptoms, a history of the disorder, medical treatments, and its place in society and film. I was also able to focus on one of my passions, film, and learn more about the industry and its standards. I understand now that film portrayals are not necessarily accurate, and will no longer assume what I view as fact, that relating to all mental disorders. I could absolutely move forward with further or similar research through college, now that I have a stronger grasp on methodology and research skills. I feel more prepared to move forward with my education, and now have work to present and be proud of.

Product:

Through my work on the research paper and oral defense presentation, I not only learned the skills to conduct and present research, but was able to exercise adaptability, patience, and organizational tactics. Having to design and structure a project of this scope was a whole new area for me and felt very daunting at first. So I started by taking things step by step, laid out my project before beginning trials, and kept a schedule to stay organized. As I've mentioned, my study was not without its limitations, and I had to find a way to get my footing back. I experienced life as it doesn't always go right and was able to adapt and change my plans to move forward. Patience was also a key virtue in this project. I had to be patient with myself and my work, knowing that this is the first real research I have conducted. I was nervous going in and struggled at several points during this process, but stayed calm and trusted myself to get things done, and I did. In future learning, I now know how to make unexpected changes, work through tough situations, and still come up with a completed product worth my pride. These skills will help me throughout my academic and professional careers, and can help me to work through personally unprecedented situations.

Process:

This research brought out the best in my academic skills and personal abilities. It allowed me to showcase my organizational skills while structuring an intricate project and exercise my productivity inside and outside of class. I was challenged to meet a large goal, unprecedented from the work I've done in the past, and I was able to face it head on without fear. I found confidence in this project, in my work, my writing, and my presentation skills. I trusted myself to meet new standards and now feel prepared to tackle whatever challenges college has to offer. I also hope to use these skills to conduct further research and explore my passions and convictions.

Acknowledgements

I want to extend my thanks to all those who helped with or influenced my research this year. First, I want to thank Jeffrey Lossman and Kabir Ananda for their help through limitations in my methodology. Additionally, I would like to thank Zella Schnitzspahn and Sam Record for their efforts in editing my final paper. Most of all, I want to extend my thanks to Mrs. Dobos for her dedication, support, and unrelenting help through this entire process. She is the reason I am able to present this finalized work.

The Next Steps

I will be continuing my education at the University of New Hampshire next fall. I am so excited to go forward into this next chapter in my life and am eternally grateful for everything I have learned through AP Research and the people who guided my work. Research is something I have loved for many years and I hope I have the opportunity to explore my passions in new ways in the future.
